Overview: Department of Design

The Bachelor of Design (B.Des.) programme is a four-year undergraduate degree designed to cultivate creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and professional competence through a balanced blend of design theory, studio-based learning, design fundamentals integrated with engineering and technology, and experiential practice. The programme emphasizes the creation of meaningful products, systems, services, and experiences that enhance the quality of life while addressing real-world challenges across diverse domains such as industrial products, digital interfaces, mobility, healthcare, consumer products, smart technologies, public systems, and sustainable development.

Industry engagement forms an integral component of the programme through expert lectures, live design projects, internships, field studies, collaborative workshops, portfolio development, and interaction with professionals from industry, academia, and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Programme Philosophy

The programme follows a Learn–Make–Test–Reflect–Implement philosophy, where learning moves continuously between theory, observation, experimentation, making, technology, user interaction and real-world implementation. Studio-based learning is complemented by interdisciplinary projects, industry engagement, field research, prototyping, entrepreneurship and reflective practice.

Strengths of the Department

A distinctive strength of the programme is its studio-based and project-oriented pedagogy, where students learn through observation, exploration, ideation, prototyping, testing, and iterative refinement. The Department leverages WCE’s well-established academic infrastructure, including advanced laboratories, workshops, digital design facilities, prototyping resources, computing facilities, and the central library, providing students with a strong foundation for experiential learning and design innovation. Strong industry engagement through internships, live projects, expert interactions, workshops, industrial visits, and collaborative activities enhances practical exposure and professional readiness.
