Student Development Activities (Academic Year 2024–25)

The Department of Humanities and Sciences at Walchand College of Engineering, Sangli, is committed to fostering holistic development among First Year B.Tech students. During the academic year 2024–25, the department conducted several activities and initiatives that supported students’ academic, emotional, social, and professional growth.

1. Voter Card Registration Drive

As a part of civic awareness and responsibility, the department organized a Voter Card Registration Drive for first-year students. In conjunction with this, an Essay Writing Competition and Wallpaper Presentation Competition were held to encourage students to reflect on the significance of democratic participation. Topics revolved around the importance of voting, youth empowerment, and democratic values.

2. Attendance of First year students to Sakal Series: Expert Lectures Series

In collaboration with the Sakal Media Group, a series of expert lectures was arranged on the topics of Artificial Intelligence, Career Opportunities in New Technologies, and Industry 4.0. Eminent speakers from academia and industry guided students about skill demands, future job trends, and career planning.

3. Mentor-Mentee Scheme

The department successfully implemented the Mentor-Mentee Scheme exclusively for first-year students. Unlike the second-year model aligned with NEP, the first-year initiative had distinct objectives:

  • Addressing the individual needs and backgrounds of students.
  • Focusing on transition from school to professional education.
  • Building confidence and offering emotional support.
Each mentor was assigned a group of 20-23 mentees. Regular meetings were held to ensure continuous interaction and academic/personal support.

4. Query Resolution Session

To ensure timely academic support and clarification, daily Query Resolution Sessions were organized between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM in Physics and Chemistry Labs. Subject faculty and coordinators addressed students’ doubts related to academics, exams, and language skills. This initiative greatly benefited slow and average learners.

5. World Environment Day Celebration

On the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5, 2024), the department initiated a campaign titled “Say No to Plastic”. Activities included:

  • Students taking a pledge to reduce plastic use.
  • Awareness rallies and poster-making competitions.
  • A proposal was submitted to the administration to reduce plastic use on campus.

6. Jayanti Celebrations

To instil values and inspire students, the department celebrated birth/death anniversaries (Jayantis) of great personalities such as:

  • A.P.J. Abdul Kalam
  • Swami Vivekananda
  • Savitribai Phule
Students presented speeches, essays, and short skits portraying the lives and teachings of these figures. The objective was to connect students with India’s rich legacy of leadership and service.

7. Induction Programme

The department participated in a five-day Induction Programme at the beginning of the academic year, consisting of:

  • Expert lectures on emotional intelligence, career building, and engineering ethics.
  • Yoga and meditation sessions.
  • Campus familiarization tours.
  • Ice-breaking games and team-building activities.
This helped in smooth academic transition and integration of students into the campus environment.

8. Internship Programmes

First-year students were encouraged to participate in internships through the MyPerfectice Platform. The Department of Humanities and Sciences actively monitored their registrations and progress on the platform. Counselling support was provided to students facing technical or registration issues. Many students availed free-of-cost online internship modules in areas like soft skills, design thinking, and emerging technologies.

9. Skill Development Programme

Proposals for skill development workshops were initiated focusing on:

  • English Communication Skills
  • Presentation Techniques
  • Public Speaking and Personality Development
  • Email Writing and Business Communication
These modules are designed to enhance employability and confidence among students, and sessions will be conducted in collaboration with the Training and Placement Cell.

10. Guidance to Higher-Class Students in Projects and Patent Work

The Department of Humanities and Sciences actively supports not only first-year students but also extends academic and research mentorship to senior and postgraduate students. As a significant contribution, Dr. R. P. Gurav from the department has been guiding Mr. Niranjan Nitin Patil, an M.Tech student, in developing an innovative project titled “Water-Based Intumescent Paint”.

The successful submission of the patent application and copyright claim for this project reflects the department’s commitment to fostering a culture of research, innovation, and intellectual property awareness among students. Such initiatives serve as inspirational examples for first-year learners and encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation across batches.
