Academic Planning & Activities

Academic Planning & Activities

The Civil Engineering Department, to ensure student-centric and holistic development of an engineering graduate, implements innovative practices in academics right from curriculum design up to the execution and assessment. These include:

Curriculum Design and Development

  • Integration of advanced and current issue-related courses (like GIS, advanced survey).
  • Regular curriculum revisions to align with industry trends and accreditation guidelines (as per NBA, NAAC).
  • By virtue of seminars, mini projects, problem-based labs, and inclusion of project-based and experiential learning modules.

Research and Innovation Initiatives

  • Establishing research groups for emerging fields like advanced software, BIM, Revit, MS Projects.
  • Collaboration with industry and the public sector for funded research projects and internships.
  • Organizing contests, challenge competitions, etc.

Laboratory and Infrastructure Development

  • Upgrading labs with advanced tools.
  • Setting up centres of excellence for specialised emerging techniques like BIM.
  • Promoting virtual labs and remote experimentation for extra knowledge of the learners.

Comprehensive Mentorship Program

  • Each student is assigned a faculty mentor to provide personalised guidance in academics, career planning, and personal development.
  • Regular mentorship meetings ensure continuous tracking of student progress and timely intervention for challenges.
  • At least a ratio of 1:20 is maintained while assigning faculty to each student batch.

Class Advisors (Teachers)

  • Every class has a designated class teacher who monitors academic performance, attendance, and overall well-being.
  • Class Teachers collaborate with students to set academic and career goals while ensuring compliance with institutional requirements.

Departmental Committees

  • Board of Studies (BoS)

Board of study committee reviews curriculum design and approves curriculum, Industry Integration, Skill Development, Outcome Monitoring, Accreditation Support, Stakeholder Feedback

  • The Department Advisory Board (DAB) plays a pivotal role in guiding the department toward achieving academic and professional excellence.
  • The PhD Progress and Evaluation Committee is responsible for monitoring and guiding the progress of research scholars to ensure the quality and timely completion of research work.

Program Delivery with Emphasis on Experiential Learning

  • Integration of project-based learning across courses to develop problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Collaboration with industry partners for live projects, case studies, and workshops on trending technologies.
  • Use of cutting-edge tools, simulation platforms to enhance the learning experience.

Projects and Mini-Projects

  • Students undertake seminars, problem-based labs, mini projects in third year and major projects in final year, encouraging application-based learning and research problem statements.
  • Projects often focus on solving real-world problems, with themes such as Smart Cities, advanced software, etc.
  • Organising project showcases to promote innovation and teamwork.
  • Mini Project and mega project guides are assigned to each group to evaluate student progress.

Industry Visits and Internships

  • Regular industrial visits to top construction industries, various government bodies like water treatment plants, etc., to provide students with practical exposure to organisational workflows and cutting-edge technologies.
  • Internship opportunities during semester breaks enable students to gain hands-on experience in real-world projects and applications.

Seminars, Workshops, and Technical Events

  • Regular departmental seminars and guest lectures by industry professionals and academic experts on emerging trends in civil engineering.
  • Workshops on BIM, Software training for Naviswork, AutoCAD, etc.

Skill Development Initiatives

  • Conducting soft skills development workshops focusing on communication, teamwork, and leadership.

Research-Oriented Activities

  • Establishing research groups in fields like concrete technology, BIM.
  • Encouraging students to publish research papers, participate in technical conferences, and apply for innovation grants.
  • Collaboration with faculty to develop innovative solutions and products for industry and societal challenges.

Technical Clubs and Extracurricular Activities

  • Active student-run club CESA along with Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) & Indian Plumbing Association (IPA) Local Chapter.
  • Organising intra- and inter-college competitions to encourage networking and knowledge sharing.
  • Our students are growing through these various associations and local chapters’ culture in curricular and extracurricular activities.

Continuous Evaluation and Improvement

  • Regular feedback from students and faculty on teaching methods, curriculum design, and overall experience.
  • Adapting to the latest trends in technology and pedagogy to maintain academic excellence.
  • Continuous Evaluation is done for laboratory courses by taking Laboratory Assessment 1 and 2 (30 Marks), End Semester Examination (40 Marks)
  • Continuous Evaluation for the theory courses is taken in the form of in-semester evaluation 1 and 2 (20 Marks), Mid Semester Evaluation (30 Marks) End Semester Evaluation (50 Marks)
  • In semester evaluation taken in the form of Field visits, Critical problem solutions, Oral, Quiz, Presentation, MCQ etc.

Program Delivery

  • The department emphasizes experiential and project-based learning to foster practical knowledge and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong industry collaborations ensure students gain exposure to real-world applications through live projects, guest lectures, and internships.
  • The use of modern teaching tools, such as LG smart boards, virtual labs, e-learning platforms, and simulations, enhances the program delivery.
  • Departmental faculty use different innovative methods to engage lecturers like video lecture, interactive lectures, Discussions etc.

Industry-Academia Collaboration

  • Partnerships for internships, programs, and guest lectures.
  • Inviting industry experts for curriculum input and mentorship.
